How To Compare Drug Plans

With the Medicare.gov Plan Finder

Starting in 2026, the way you shop for Medicare prescription drug plans is changing — and we know it may feel like a big shift. Most insurance companies are no longer allowing agencies like Medicare Hero to compare or enroll clients in stand-alone Part D drug plans. This change affects all agents and agencies — not just us.

Going forward, the best way to see all available drug plans in your area is to use the official Medicare.gov Plan Finder. So follow along as we show you how to use this new tool step by step.

Gather these items before you begin:

Your Medicare card (you’ll need your Medicare number)

Complete list of medications (including exact names and dosages)

Your preferred pharmacy (name and address)

For the best results, log into your Medicare.gov account so your information is saved and you can easily come back to it later.

How To Use The Medicare.gov Plan Finder

2026 Plan information is released October 1st so please do NOT use this tool before October 1st!

1 Go to Medicare.gov and Log In

  • Click the green button that says “Log In”
  • Enter your username and password or create an account
  • You’ll need your Medicare card to create an account

Having trouble logging in? You can continue without logging in, but your medications and pharmacies won’t be saved, and you’ll need to re-enter them next time you use the tool.

2 Find the Plan Finder Tool

Once you’re logged in, you need to locate the Plan Finder tool.

  • Look for “Find plans” or “Plan Finder” on your dashboard
  • Click on “Find health & drug plans”
  • Select “Prescription drug plans” (not Medicare Advantage)
  • Your zip code should automatically populate

The Plan Finder might also be under “Compare Plans” or “Shop Plans” depending on when you access it.

3 Enter Your Medications

This is the most important step—getting your medication list exactly right.

Click “Add drugs” or “Enter your medications”

  • Type the exact name of each medication (generic or brand name)
  • Select the correct dosage and quantity
  • Add one medication at a time

Be precise with medication names and dosages. Small differences can affect pricing significantly.

Can’t find your medication? Try searching by both generic and brand names. Sometimes one works better than the other.

4 Add Your Preferred Pharmacies

Tell Medicare.gov which pharmacies you prefer to use.

  • Click “Add pharmacies” or “Select your pharmacy”
  • Search by pharmacy name or zip code
  • Select your preferred location(s)
  • You can add multiple pharmacies if you use different ones

Add both your local pharmacy and a mail-order option if you use one. This gives you the most accurate pricing comparison.

5 Review Your Plan Results

Now you’ll see all drug plans available, ranked by Total Drug & Premium Cost for the year.

  • Plans are ranked from lowest to highest Total Drug & Premium Cost.
  • This means that the plan at the top of the page is estimated to save you the most money overall.
  • You can also review the monthly plan premium and drug deductible.

The Total Drug and premium Cost is a great indicator of which plan is your best option! This total cost includes all of your expected expenses related to your drug plan for the entire year including your premium, deductible, and copays for your specific medications.

6 Compare Plan Details

Before making a decision, you can review the details of your top plan options.

  • To view more details click the “Plan Details” button located below each plan name.
  • Review your pharmacies to make sure they are in network
  • You can check your medication pricing as well as any prior authorization requirements for your medications

Don’t get lost in the details! Remember, this plan finder tool has already done all the hard work for you by adding up all these detailed costs and giving you one simple Total Drug & Premium Cost for the year. The plan with the lowest total cost is likely your best option.

7 Enroll in Your Chosen Plan (If Needed)

Found a better drug plan? You can enroll directly on Medicare.gov.

  • Click “Enroll” next to your chosen plan
  • Follow the enrollment prompts
  • Review all information before submitting
  • Print or save your confirmation
  • Your new drug coverage will start January 1st

If you’re happy with your current drug plan after reviewing the changes, you don’t need to do anything! Your current plan will automatically renew.
